Yeah, I understand that the original GBA model probably couldn't do it in the same way as the DS and future Nintendo handhelds, and that some GBA games had a sleep option. But with the SP they could've easily added in sleep mode in the same way as the future handhelds. Considering the DS released only about a year afterwards, they had to have come up with the idea for closing it to have it go into sleep mode by then.
But EVEN SO, when the GBA games then came to 3DS Virtual Console, only through the ambassador program, they STILL didn't have a sleep mode function despite the fact that the 3DS can easily go into sleep mode, even for other Virtual Console titles from NES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Gear. As for Wii U VC it makes sense there would be no sleep mode, as it is a home console which doesn't have the feature normally.
