A Pokemon virus exists called the Pokerus. Thankfully, it isn't deadly in the slightest and actually makes it easier to raise your Pokemon. It affects a Pokemon's effort values (EV's) by doubling them! However, the chances of your Pokemon catching it are around 1 in 21,845. To put that into perspective, the chances of encountering a shiny Pokémon is 1 in 8192. However when you get the Pokerus, you can spread it amongst your Pokemon to make them easier to raise. Once a Pokemon is cured of it over time, they become immune and cannot get it again. You'll be told by the Pokemon Centre nurse if any of your Pokemon have caught the virus.
