When do you think next gen consoles will release?

Maybe it's a bit early to be talking about it, but when do you think the consoles for next generation will be released?

For home consoles, I think Nintendo's next console will release earlier than the others again. Most likely during holiday 2018 (maybe 2017, but that's a bit too early imo) I think the next Playstation and Xbox will both release in either 2019 or 2020, depending on the games still being released.

For handhelds, I think Nintendo's new handheld will release in 2016. And Sony's next handheld will likely release in the year never. XD

I say mid-2016 for the next Nintendo handheld.
Mid-2017 or late 2017 for Nintendo's next home console.

Surely the question is if rather than when?

^ Well considering Nintendo has confirmed they are working on new consoles, there will be a next generation, even if Nintendo were to be the only company releasing new consoles. (although I'm sure there will be other consoles as well) I really don't think game consoles are dead. Just because sales seem kind of slow for them right now doesn't mean there won't be more in the future. People still like to play games.

I think 2017 is most likely, for both the handhelds and the consoles.

You also have to look at the digital scene. The need for physical consoles is pretty much low at this point. Sony has hinted that their next console might only make use of their Playstation Now program and put their cloud into mass use.

The only company I see making another console for next gen is Nintendo, because they are heavy traditionalists. But I do think that's going to cost them considering they would still need resources for making the physical copies of games and lens reading technology. If Sony (and Microsoft cuz let's face it, they are American copycats) does a digital route, their costs would go down drastically since they cut out the middle man. People would rush to the idea too, I mean the PS4 has been CRUSHING the competition this gen so Sony has its dedicated fanbase behind them.

^ I see what you mean, I definitely think if Sony and Microsoft release new consoles next gen, they will be services rather than physical consoles, so they may actually release much sooner. But with Nintendo, they will stick with actual hardware. They like to make their consoles unique, and it's hard to do that simply through a service.

Personally, I love buying digital copies of games but there are benefits of buying discs, like you can sell/trade them and it doesn't put a strain on your storage. However with digital, no scratches and you can download them very quickly!
