Nintendo has patented a handheld device using infrared sensors to detect distance. Based on the images it appears to be something similar to Kinect, using infrared camera and distance sensor, gesture recognition, and distance measuring, examples including a projector and GPS receiver.

This isn't the most interesting patent Nintendo has made in recent years, but it's still something that could potentially be used in future handhelds. It seems to be similar to Kinect based on the images they included, but I'm not quite sure that's how it's intended to be used. They're kind of hard to make out.

Isn't that  just what the New 3DS uses so it can determine where your face is for the 3D tracking?

^ I think it's slightly different as it doesn't actually detect distance but rather just the shape of the face, this works with anything in front of the system and measures its distance.

So is Nintendo going to use Kinect technology for their NX in order to play games via the HD tv? Stay tuned & find out on the next adventures of Nintendo & friends. ;D

^ Haha. I honestly don't really think they'll do that with NX though, based on the way the patent is worded it seems like it'd be for their next handheld, the handheld version of NX, or the NX controller, rather than the console itself like Kinect. Although I feel like that wouldn't work as well as Kinect, and Kinect already doesn't work all that well so...not sure what they're going for here. But knowing how patents usually go they'll end up never using it anyway. XD
