Minecraft: Wii U Edition was confirmed today! The game will be digital only at launch, with a planned retail release later on. (releases December 17th on the eShop)

Mojang’s video game phenomenon Minecraft launches worldwide on Nintendo’s Wii U home console on Dec. 17. Minecraft: Wii U Edition comes with multiple add-on content packs, and will be available in the Nintendo eShop on Wii U in North America for $29.99. Nintendo and Mojang are also collaborating on new content for Nintendo fans to be released at a future date. More details about this content will be released at a later time.

The game will feature off-TV play, so players can keep their games going on the screen of the Wii U GamePad controller if another family member wants to watch something else on TV. The game also comes with some of the most popular current Minecraft add-on content packs:

    Battle & Beasts Skin Pack
Battle & Beasts 2 Skin Pack
    Natural Texture Pack
    City Texture Pack

    Festive Mash-up Pack

“With so many included add-on content packs, Minecraft: Wii U Edition brings an exciting collection of Minecraft content and experiences to Nintendo fans,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO. “Wii U players will have plenty of reasons to keep coming back to this iconic gaming experience.”

In addition to the content that comes with the game, players will also be able to expand their experience with 16 additional add-on packs available for purchase within the Nintendo eShop at launch:

    1. Festive Skin Pack
    2. The Simpsons Skin Pack
    3. Doctor Who Skins Volume 1
    4. Doctor Who Skins Volume 2
    5. Star Wars Classic Skin Pack
    6. Star Wars Rebels Skin Pack
    7. Star Wars Prequel Skin Pack

Remember that Wii U features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit http://www.nintendo.com/wiiu.

Cool! I probably won't purchase it but it's nice to see it's finally coming to a Nintendo platform after such a long period of time. It is strange to see Microsoft publishing a Wii U title though. XD

Publish more Wii U titles Microsoft!
Banjo-Threeie would be nice, and Rare Replay.

Though I'm glad Nintendo can actually collaborate with companies other than SEGA, Bandai Namco, Capcom and Koei Tecmo for once.

Well, that was unexpected! Not bad, not amazing, but legit surprised me. I guess with all these packs the game won't be as bare-bones as I thought it would be. Also Microsoft working with Nintendo, again, very surprised.

i feel like they only did this to please those asking for it on Miiverse. I just don't know why anyone thought we where getting Smash Bros news or Pokemon when the head indie and 3rd party guy said this.

I kind of do, but it's more that I don't like playing alone or without some sort of goal which is most of the time, and I get bored on it easily.

Nope. I think its ridiculous how much love this game gets when in reality it's just a simple building game simulator (impo). I can do that just as easily with LBP.

I can't say I care terribly much for this, but maybe some people will appreciate it. And then stop demanding for it to be released on Miiverse.

What does catch my attention is that the Skyrim texture pack is available as an add-on. The Elder Scrolls on a Nintendo console (in a way) was the last thing I expected to see.

Super Mario content is coming to the Wii U version of Minecraft!

Free Super Mario-Themed Game Update Available only on Minecraft: Wii U Edition on 18th May

9th May, 2016 – In a match made in block-shaped heaven, Nintendo is partnering with Mojang and Microsoft to bring the imaginative worlds of the Super Mario series and Minecraft together. On 18th May the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack comes exclusively to Minecraft: Wii U Edition as a free game update. For the first time ever, players will be able to fend off blocky Hammer Bros. and Dry Bones the same way they do Creepers and Zombies.

After downloading the update, players who own the Minecraft: Wii U Edition digital game which launched last December will have immediate access to new skins, a Super Mario-themed pre-made world, and a set of Super Mario-themed music and item textures, all inspired by games in the iconic Super Mario series such as Super Mario World, Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. Minecraft fans can take a closer look at the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack in action in this trailer.

The Wii U version of Minecraft features the full game, as well as many of the most popular previously released content packs for no extra charge. Downloading the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack gives players 40 new Super Mario-themed skins, which transform the game’s characters into familiar heroes like Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach, and even troublemakers like Bowser, Wario and all seven of Bowser’s minions. All the world and item textures in the game will also be redone, providing players the opportunity to create their own Super Mario-themed locations within the world of Minecraft. While building, players will even enjoy listening to the smooth sounds of 15 pieces of music from Super Mario 64. Builders of all ages will love crafting massive new worlds using building blocks inspired by a series as accessible and recognisable as Super Mario.

Since launching in 2011, Minecraft has become a global phenomenon, selling more than 70 million games worldwide. The game places players in a massive randomly generated world and lets them explore, harvest resources and craft anything their imaginations can conjure. The Wii U version of Minecraft features Off-TV Play, touch screen functionality and online multiplayer.

Minecraft: Wii U Edition can currently be downloaded in Nintendo eShop for the Wii U console and via the Nintendo UK website.

Get ready to explore the world of Minecraft like never before when the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack comes exclusively to Minecraft: Wii U Edition on 18th May.

The only reason this is interesting to me is because it just once again reconfirms that rumor is true. You can't really guess all of what has been revealed since the rumor came about, the fact that it's all come true and literally nothing has been denied within the past 2 months just goes to show that it's real. I'm still wondering what the 3DS N-Stars game is though.

Here is some more info on how the Mario pack happened and other Nintendo packs could happen.

IGN wrote:Baker shared a few details about how the partnership between Nintendo, Mojang, and 4J Studio -- the developer that ported Minecraft to video game consoles -- came together. Despite what Baker describes as a long time appreciation of Mojang's wonderful sandbox game, Minecraft: Wii U Edition wasn't green-lit until Fall 2014. Once the partnership was established, all companies involved decided to move quickly and prep Minecraft Wii U for launch in December 2015. The Mario Mash-up Pack is the next step in the collaboration but, because it's a free update, it is unclear what's the metric of success here. Would Nintendo consider another IP for future partnership? It's not hard to see Zelda, Pokemon, or many other characters from Nintendo's stable made in Minecraft. Baker didn't reveal any plans for another partnership, but he told IGN that fans should be vocal about what they want to see next.

If more packs happen a Zelda one would make sense since it just seems like a hand and glove fit in the Minecraft world and it would be something else for the 30th anniversary.
