    As we all know, Nintendo DS was never planned as a successor to the Game Boy Advance, but rather as a third pillar platform. Obviously, it was hugely successful and ended up actually becoming it's successor in the end due to this, but there was actually another handheld in development at the same time that was planned as a successor to the Game Boy Advance. (which was confirmed by Nintendo Source from like 2004 lol) What do you think the successor was supposed to be like? When would it have released if DS wasn't as successful?

    I find it odd that they would just scrap the console altogether, and it almost makes me wonder if the idea behind their next handheld ended up becoming the 3DS when the time for a DS successor rolled around. Maybe it'd be a more powerful Game Boy that could do the same no-glasses 3D type thing as the 3DS. Otherwise I can't really think of anything, but obviously the original plan for the GBA's successor didn't go through.

    The DS was just so popular.
    They may have put elements of it into the DSi, 3DS, New 3DS, etc.
    There's no real reason to bring it back now.

    For a second I was thinking you were talking about the GBA SP. Razz

    I actually completely forgot about this. But I won't blame them - the DS was so amazing when compare to the GBA, honestly. Razz

    Wonder how it would be like if it remained though...
    Maybe it would end off being a lot more like the PSP with it's single screen...?

    I think it was scrapped- much like Luma said, there is no real reason to bring the GBA back after the DS series were such a hit, really

    @Luma
    Lol I'm not saying they should bring it back now, the tech would've been over a decade old anyway. Just speculating over what exactly it would've been like and why it never ended up a thing.

    @Yoshiman
    I'm guessing so, considering they must've thought the dual screen idea might not go over so well, so they had another normal handheld in the pipeline just in case it didn't. But then it did.

    @Nessness
    Yep, it just makes me wonder what it could've been...

    Of course we'll likely never know what happened to it, the DS' success must have put all the Gameboy family to rest and started the DS system family. It would probably have been like the PSP as Yoshiman said, a more powerful Gameboy I guess. It could have been an unusual device with some nice feature that future Nintendo handhelds have or something scrapped that never made it to future systems. Something tells me it would have been like the Wii U Gamepad in design. At least it having the control sticks. Maybe it was for the best they didn't make it but who knows, it could have been great and successful like the DS. I honestly prefer the Dual Screens so I'm glad it went well. Nice to look back and think about what could have been though.
