Several GameStop stores have confirmed to CNET that all new and unopened Wii U Basic Set models on store shelves are to be returned. The reason for the recall is currently unknown, but the return takes place on Tuesday, June 18th, which is exactly one week after Nintendo’s E3 Nintendo Direct presentation on the 11th of this month. Unlike the Wii U Deluxe Set, the Wii U Basic Set has only 8GB of memory and doesn’t come packaged with party game Nintendo Land.

Nintendo of America senior director of corporate communications, Charlie Scibetta, has provided the following statement to IGN:

“There is a current misperception about Wii U hardware. To clarify: Nintendo is working with its retail partners to simply rebalance the stock of the White 8GB and the Black 32GB Wii U models in the market. Consumers looking for either model will continue to find them available.”
I still don't see why you would recall them.
Maybe there is a problem they don't want to mention...

I already posted about that. They said they want to "rebalance the stock" in the quote you put up there, so they probably just want an equal amount of Basic Sets and Deluxe Sets at the stores. Not sure why they would need to do that though.

Wait, but did you mention the "recalled" part.
I'm still wondering if what he said is the exact truth...

Ha, the Wii was recalled back when it launched too & I held onto my launch Wii as I refused to return it. At the time Wii's were hard to come by so I figured if Nintendo really wanted mine they'd come & get it. >:3 Same with the basic set if I had purchased one. xp

Hm now that I think about it...I mentioned my Wii wouldn't read discs right? I've heard a lot of other Wiis that were launch Wiis did that as well recently. So maybe they knew about this beforehand even though it's like 7 years later? Razz

So what I think is that there may be a problem with Wii U Basic packages, and they're recalling them for that very reason.

I think they just want the Basic Set in the stores for a little longer. Because the Deluxe Set is getting a White Version in Japan.

Despite a report claiming that GameStop is discontinuing the Wii U 8GB Basic model, Nintendo UK says that the console will still continue to go on sale in the United Kingdom. Yesterday Kotaku received information from a GameStop employee email that the leading North American video game retailer will be discontinuing the model from the 18th of June. It sounds fairly likely that this will happen worldwide, but Nintendo just isn’t ready to announce this yet. We should hear more on June 11th at 3pm BST.
UK still continuing to sell it?
    Odd....
Nintendo still hasn't said anything else about it officially yet...

Kotaku is also saying that Best Buy will be pulling all of the Wii U Basic Sets.

    The Best
Buy flyer says "stores should pull all new in box units and send them
back" on June 10-11. "Stores should expect to see more Wii U deluxe
units arriving in the coming weeks."

    The black
32 GB Wii U Deluxe, which has sold for $350 and includes a game, doesn't
appear to be going anywhere, though a price drop is surely possible.
Note that Best Buy is anticipating more Wii U Deluxe units, perhaps a
sign that Nintendo is going to start delivering the announced-for-Japan
white 32GB unit in North America soon, too.

Expect to find out more on June 11 at 10am ET, 7am PT when Nintendo holds its big online Nintendo Direct to kick off E3. And, remember, Best Buy is partnering
with Nintendo next week to let shoppers play Nintendo's E3 Wii U demos
at the stores. Surely they're on top of whatever Nintendo's got planned.

It looks like Iwata or Reggie will tell everyone about what's happening with the Wii U Basic Set.

I thought I posted here earlier, maybe that was when my internet stopped connecting for whatever reason.

Anyway, I wanted a white deluxe model in the first place, so even if I'll be keeping my black one, I'm glad they might be adding the white 32 GB ones.

    @Shadow
While that is true...I think it's still possible to see why they're doing this in the Direct, they need to tell us eventually anyway.

Australian retailer EB Games recently came under fire when the company appeared to be recalling the Wii U Basic model from its shelves. But now, EB Games has claimed that this is incorrect information and were simply conducting a stock rebalance. EB Games is not the only one to do so in the last couple of months, as US retailer GameStop hit a similar trend when they recalled the Wii U Basic bundle in stores. However, this had been – again – misinterpreted as Charlie Scibetta, Nintendo of America senior director of corporate communications, said it was a simple rebalance of stock and the consumer would continue to find the SKU available in GameStop. EB Games refuted these claims by issuing the following statement:
Recently it has been reported that EB Games is doing a recall on the Wii U White 8GB Pack. This information is incorrect. We are currently conducting a stock rebalance, which is standard procedure with all of our products and involves sending a portion of our stock back to our Head Office to get redistributed. All stores still have inventory of this product, and will continue to stock it as per normal for the foreseeable future.

I think there is something wrong with it when three big retailers are doing this.
Nintendo I believe is covering something up.

Update Best Buy, Target and Game Stop have removed the Wii U basic sets from there online stores.

    Source

I really think the Wii U basic sets will be gone for good soon and the Wii U Deluxe set will be changed to $300.

Iwata just needs to say in a Nintendo Direct or an interview that the Wii basic set has been dropped

I keep thinking there will be a Nintendo Direct in August, so maybe he'll mention it then. But I totally agree with you Gameguy. As long as they add the White Wii U deluxe set, because they have that in Japan, and it sucks that you can only get one color for each set.
