Interesting there's no thread on this already! What are your preferred rules?
For 1 v 1's I like to play 2 stocks, no items and I tend to choose tournament legal stages but I'm not exclusive to them.
If it's a 3 man FFA or a 4 man FFA I tend to up the stock to 3-4, still keep the items off and maybe go a little more dynamic with stage choices anyway. (Considering it's hardly a competitive game with 3-4 people)
But I also have an extra unwritten (but programmed) rule that the loser of the round picks the rules for the next! A lot of people assume the host is always controlling the rules, but the game is actually programmed to give the loser the choice of rules.
It's good to experience how other people play the game sometimes, be times or just having fun with items! So how about you guys? Do you play for fun... or for glory?
