My top 5 Wii U games of 2016

2016 was a transition year for Nintendo so there where even less Wii U games in 2016. With that said I was still able to make a top 5.

You know Star Fox Zero might have been received better if it came out in 2015. The gamepad controls felt forced, it was another Star Fox 64 like game and new elements did not always work in some levels. With that said the game has a great soundtrack, the level design is great and it was nice to see the series get one more game even though it's likely on it's death bed now after so many failed games.

While I still have yet to play Star Fox Zero I find it odd that everyone seems to place it so low on lists like this, I think it looks like the best Wii U release of the year. (which granted isn't saying much considering, but I think it's weird regardless)

To be fair a lot of people didn't like the motion controls as well as the constant screen switching you have to do, then there're some levels that are really sluggish. Still being number 5 in a top list is actually a good praise unless there's exactly 5 games that came out.

Hardly anyone thinks it's the best Wii U release of the year from what I have seen. It's really only the hardcore Star Fox fans that mastered the controls that think so.

I have to give credit to Namco for making another new great fighting game in Pokken. The stage selection is nice, there are many items to collect and there are so many unique Pokemon that I enjoy using such as Gengar, Gardevoir, Chandelure and my favorite character in the game Braixen. With that said the game really needed more things to it such as the DLC characters form the arcade version, more stages and online is mostly dead now. With that said I have hope for a future port on the Switch with how big this game could be with an esports push.

Tokyo Mirrage Sessions is one of the best gems on the Wii U. Sure the game was not the crossover people wanted and it's strange how NOA never got english voice actors for the game. With that said the gameplay, level design and soundtrack are really good and the game will last you hours if you go for 100%. It also makes me want to try the Persona series on Playstation at some point.

I definitely ended up liking this one a lot more than I thought I would, and it ended up being my favorite U game. Simple plot, using the gamepad in a unique way more than just being a map, mixing game styles in a very unexpected way. Though that may be because I enjoy SMT games a bit more than Fire Emblem.

I still need to play Tokyo Mirage Sessions, that and Star Fox are the two Wii U games I still want to play at some point, even with the Switch just a couple months out from release. It looks pretty cool.

Thousand Year Door is my favorite game of all time though that's not stoping me from enjoying Color Splash for what it is. The level design is good, the card battle system is pretty fun, the game is really colorful and the soundtrack is great. I do wish it had less New Super Mario Bros elements and Toads even though it's a issue with the series in whole now so you can't really balme it on the people that worked on the game when Nintendo is the ones pushing those things.

Shantae Half Genie Hero is another great game in the Shantae series. The levels design is good, the soundtrack is nice and the new transformations are great. The only downside is the backtracking and even then it's not that bad if you buy the warp item.

Yeah Half Genie Hero did look like a really good game, and there's still more content coming for Shantae which I'm really interested in seeing how they handle. Is each character getting their own short story thing, or just playing the original story with another character, I'm really eager to see how it goes.

YES SHANTAE. It isn't Wii U exclusive but I'm still glad to see it top this list, what a great looking game. I'm planning to buy it pretty soon, Pirate's Curse has been my favorite so far but this could definitely top it. It's nice to see more successful Kickstarter game campaigns.
