Prepare yourselves for a long ass opinion here...
The first series holds a lot of nostalgia for me, and I personally think it isn't written to badly or too repetitively, but I think it's all due to me loving Gen 1 so much, I feel anything before Johto is a trademark to the series.
Now anything Jhtoto and on wards seems to follow the same routine, with the Kanto series being the only one I've attempted to watch in order (as a kid and as an adult), all of these episodes are erratic and just produce the same kind of thing. But still fun to watch as a child, and memorable to watch as an adult.
The Hoenn series is where it went a bit down hill for me, even in my early teens I felt the voice switches and lack of Misty from the cast seemed ridiculous, the plots seems even less interesting even for children, and it generally lost me (like that whole gen did to many)... Sinnoh wasn't too different... still just a mish-mash of random this and that.
Then Unova came along, and really just slapped my face with a "Pokemon is Back, man". It felt so much like he original series did, old pokemon cameos or anything, a total fresh cast of gym leaders a partners... it's still not as good as the original, but if anyone were to watch a series other than the first, I'd lead them to this one.
