Microsoft Considered Buying Nintendo in 2000 Empty Microsoft Considered Buying Nintendo in 2000

While developing the original Xbox, Microsoft considered buying out Nintendo to help with software output on their console, and having familiar IP.

Xbox is a household name when it comes to gaming, but it wasn't like that when Microsoft was first working on the system. They had to figure out how to make a big splash, which is when all sorts of zany ideas were being tossed around. Original Xbox co-creator Seamus Blackley said that a number of people working on Xbox wanted Microsoft to snatch up Nintendo. That would have been a huge deal at the time, but it obviously didn't happen. Things would certainly be different today!

What?! That's honestly kind of insane! It would've been a HUGE buyout. I wonder what the game industry would be like today if they had actually gone through with this idea.

I am so glad this didn't happen. I love Nintendo as they are & having M$ buy them out would have changed Nintendo drastically & would also be making triple A games that none of us Nintendo fans usually purchase. Razz

I'm glad the buyout never became a thing. Nintendo likely would have never made a new IP again knowing Microsoft and there games likely would have been even more rushed.

No matter how much they would've offered, Yamauchi believed in his company enough, that he wouldn't have sold it.
Plus if Rare alone sold for $375 Million, Microsoft would've poured their pockets put to buy Nintendo.
