My top 5 Switch games of 2018

While 2018 did not have a great lineup like 2017 I enjoyed it more then others. For this list I will only be including new exclusives to the system.

While most where disappointed with Star Allies I thought it was good even if it comes nowhere close to Planet Robobot. The ability to mix powers again and I like how you can play as so many different characters and of course the bosses where enjoyable. HAL added in the new heroes in another dimension mode that's harder then the main game, a harder mode for the ultimate choice boss rush and many popular dream friends such as Marx, Susie and Adeleine. It just goes to show you that free DLC can turn an alright game into a good one.

Super Mario Party is the best Mario Party game in years. The boards are fun again, the roster is the biggest one yet, the mini-games are good for the most part and even the side modes are great. My favorite board is Megafruit Paradise due to the different islands and it reminds of the Yoshi board from Mario Party 1. River Survival is a fun new mode that features team mini-games that anyone can play, challenge road is a fun single player mode and sound stage is where your play all of the rhythm games. While the game has issues such as crap online and the boards feeling small there is more good then bad this time around and I was able to put in 25 hours into the game.

Torna pretty much took most of my issues I had with the regular Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and fixed them up. Lora is a much better main character then Rex, you get all of the bases you need by just playing through the story and I hardly ever got lost. I loved being able to play through the story of the past, all of the playable characters where enjoyable and the music was fantastic. My only issue is that you where gated off from moving on sometimes if you did not do enough quests . It just goes to show you that not every JRPG needs to be a huge 100 hour game when 25 to 30 hours is more then enough time.

Super Smash Btos Ultimate is just pure fn. The game has not even been out for a full month yet and I have almost put in 70 hours. I enjoyed World of Light, SmashDown Squid Strike and of course the regular Smash mode. I also like how each character has there own classic mode now, the huge amount of stages and the stage morph really mixes things up. With that said there only being 4 new stages is a bit of a downer and the Spirits don't feel as special as the trophies due to them not telling you anything about the character. Outside of that this is a great game and I can't wait for all of the DLC.

Octopath Traveler was by fair the game I played the most in 2018 clocking in at over 100 hours. I played through the story of each character all the way to the end, did a ton of side quests and took out the super bosses so that I could get the final 4 jobs. The artstyle, music and some of the side characters are also great. My favorite characters have to be Primrose and Alfyn due to there stories and character traits being ones that stand out. Sadly there are a few issues I have with the game such as the party members never really interacting with each other, not being able to switch party members out on the menu and there is way too much grinding. With that said it still came in a number 1 due to most of the content that is in Ultimate coming from past games even if I will end up playing it more over time then Octopath.
